WELCOME TO EQUINE HEART
The heart is the most important muscle in a thoroughbred’s body. Protect your investment – request a thorough heart evaluation by cardiac experts
Congenital or acquired heart defects can prevent your horse from achieving its full potential.
The equine cardiovascular system is one of the most efficient in nature. At peak exercise a horse’s heart beats at around 220 - 240 beats per minute and pumps over 200 litres of blood per minute.
Training for thoroughbred racing places significant load on the heart, preparing it to deliver maximum circulation to working muscles during competition. Any heart defect will reduce the effectiveness of the heart, and this is likely to reduce athletic performance to some degree.
The importance of the heart cannot be overstated and any condition affecting it should be carefully monitored and diagnosed by cardiac specialists.
Our highly trained team will find and identify cardiac defects using harmless ultrasound.
Echocardiography (heart ultrasound) is the gold standard for detection of structural heart disease.
The technique is harmless, using no radiation and causing no pain or distress.
